Transformer Modernization & Smart Kraft Upgrade

The Challenge

One of the most critical power generation plants in the Haina industrial zone was facing inefficiencies in its emission control system. The existing transformers (conventional ALSTOM technology) in the electrostatic precipitators were suffering from recurrent failures, compromising operational continuity and environmental compliance.

The client required the substitution of four (4) power transformer units with new Smart Kraft technology, a logistical challenge that required zero downtime beyond the scheduled maintenance window.

The VPM Solution

Our engineering team deployed a high-level operation for the substitution and system modernization.

1. Heavy Logistics & Dismantling

We performed the safe disconnection of high-voltage busbars and the dismantling of the old transformers.

  • Challenge: Due to the elevated location of the equipment, specialized cranes were used for the safe lifting and removal of multi-ton units.
  • Safety: Strict Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) protocols were implemented.

2. Smart Kraft Technology Installation

We installed four new units with intelligent control technology. This included:

  • Busbar Coupling: Adaptation of high-voltage busbars to the new Smart Kraft equipment inputs.
  • Structural Modification: Adjustment of ducts and structural supports to accommodate new dimensions.
  • Conduit Installation: Installation of new connection boxes and conduit pipes for control and power wiring.

3. Testing & Commissioning

Before energization, comprehensive testing was conducted:

  • Insulation resistance tests (Megger) to verify dielectric strength.
  • Contact resistance tests on new connections.
  • Verification of integration with the plant’s SCADA system.

Results

  • Operational Efficiency: Increased capture capacity of precipitators due to voltage stability.
  • Reliability: Drastic reduction in unscheduled stops due to transformer failures.
  • Safety: Total renewal of insulation and power wiring.
